What are chicken cutlets, and which one is yours

"Chicken cutlets" is the nickname for silicone bra inserts, because that is what a pair looks like on the counter. The name stuck; the product moved on. Here is what a modern insert is, what it does, and how to choose one.

What they are

A silicone shape, usually a teardrop, that sits under the breast and pushes it up and in. The old ones were loose and slid around inside a bra. The current ones are adhesive on one or both faces, so they stick to skin and to the cup, and they stay where you put them with or without a bra.

What they do

Three things, depending on the shape. Lift: a padded teardrop placed low carries the breast upward. Volume: the padding adds a cup or two. Cleavage: a heart shape pushes inward and closes the gap. A thin insert does the first without the second.

Adhesive or not

Non-adhesive inserts only work inside a bra, and even then they migrate. Adhesive inserts work inside a bra, inside a swimsuit, or on their own under a neckline with nothing else. Sculpette inserts are adhesive on both faces: one side grips skin, the other grips fabric.

Padded or thin

Padded for the plunge, the strapless dress and any time you want more. Thin for a fitted top, a knit or a slip dress where padding would print through and you only want a cleaner line.

The four shapes

The Sculpt: full padding, lifts up to two cup sizes, the one to buy first. The Sculpt Lite: feather-thin, lifts without adding size. The Sculpt Petite: The Sculpt scaled down for an A or B cup. Sizing

Inserts are sized by cup volume, AA to I, and the letter on your bra is only a starting point. A 32D and a 36B take the same insert. The size guide does the conversion. Between two sizes, take the smaller: the edge has to sit under the breast, not beyond it.

How to put them in

Clean dry skin, nothing on the chest. Peel from the corner, set the wide edge under the breast with the tip toward the armpit, press from the outside in, lift and hold for ten seconds. With a sticky bra

For a fuller bust, the insert goes on first and a sticky bra goes over it. The insert carries the weight, the bra shapes and covers. The best sticky bra for large breasts goes through that setup.

Care
