What to wear under a backless dress

A backless dress removes the one thing a bra needs: somewhere to anchor. The band is gone, the straps are gone, and whatever holds you up has to hold onto you. There are four ways to do that. Which one is yours depends on your cup size and on how much the front of the dress is open.

The short answer

A cup or B cup with a modest front: nothing, or a nipple cover. A to D with a low front: an adhesive backless bra. D and up: an adhesive bra with inserts under it, or body tape anchored low. A plunge that dives past the sternum, any size: inserts plus tape, not a bra.

1. An adhesive backless bra

This is what most people mean by a backless bra. Two silicone cups that stick to the breast, joined by a clasp at the front. No band, no wings, nothing across the back. The clasp is what does the work: close it and the two cups pull toward the center, which is where the cleavage comes from.

What it holds: a backless dress, a halter, an open-back top, a low V. What it does not hold: a neckline that opens below the clasp, because the clasp shows.

2. Bra inserts, on their own

If the front is as open as the back, a bra has nowhere to hide and inserts are the answer. A padded silicone insert sticks to the underside of the breast and to the dress, carries the weight up, and has no clasp to show. 3. Body tape

Tape is the most adjustable option and the one that takes practice. A strip anchored under the breast and run up toward the shoulder lifts on its own, holds a wrap closed, and keeps a neckline from creeping. It does not add volume. The Body Tape is 6 cm of stretch cotton on a 5 m roll, so you cut it to the dress. Use it alone on a smaller bust, or over inserts on a larger one.

4. Nothing, or a nipple cover

By cup size

AA to B. A thin adhesive bra or nothing. If you want shape, The Sculpt Petite is a padded insert scaled to a small frame.

How to make it stay

Every adhesive product fails for the same reason, and it is not the adhesive. It is what is on the skin under it. Lotion, oil, deodorant that drifted, or a self-tanner still developing all put a film between the silicone and you. Shower, dry completely, put nothing on the chest, and give it ten minutes. What to do the day before

Try the whole setup on with the dress. Not the bra alone, the dress over it, in daylight, with a mirror behind you. Adhesive products are sized by cup and placed by hand, and the day-before run is how you find out the cup is one size big or the clasp sits a finger too high. It also gives the skin a rest day before the real wear.
