Swimsuit push-up inserts that stay in the water

The pads that come sewn into a swimsuit float, fold and migrate. A silicone insert sticks to the skin and the suit and stays put through a swim, and it adds the lift the suit's own padding never did. Here is how to use one in the water.

Why foam pads fail

Foam is lighter than water and held in place by a pocket. In the pool the pocket fills, the foam lifts, and the pad ends up folded at the top of the cup. Removable pads are worse because there is nothing to stop them leaving. A silicone insert is denser than water and adhesive on both faces, so it stays under the breast and against the cup whatever the water does.

Which insert

The Sculpt for lift and volume under a triangle top, a bandeau or a one-piece with a low front. The Sculpt Lite for shape without added size under a sports-style top. The Sweetheart for cleavage under a square or scoop neckline. The Sculpt Petite for an A or B cup.

Placement for water

Dry skin, no sunscreen on the chest yet. Peel from the corner, set the wide end under the breast, tip toward the armpit, press from the outside in and lift. Then put the suit on and press the cup over the insert so the outer face grips the fabric. Sunscreen goes on after, around the edge, not under it. Sunscreen under the adhesive is the most common reason an insert lets go at the beach.

Take out the suit's own pads

If the top has removable pads, take them out. Two layers of padding print through wet fabric and the foam will still float even with the insert underneath.

In the water

The adhesive is sweat and water resistant and holds through swimming, but salt and chlorine sit on it afterward. Rinse the insert in fresh water when you are out, and rinse the skin before reapplying.

After

Peel slowly from the outer edge inward. Wash with warm water and a drop of mild soap, fingertips only, air dry adhesive side up, back on the film. Never leave it in a hot bag or on a sunny towel; heat softens silicone. How to clean a sticky bra and inserts has the full routine.

Sizing

By cup volume, AA to I, same as under a dress. The size guide converts. Under a swimsuit, if you sit between two sizes, take the smaller: a wet cup shows an edge that a dry one hides.
